International Friendly: Oranje to Meet the Desert Warriors

Netherlands vs Algeria

Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands host Algeria at the De Kuip Stadium in Rotterdam on Wednesday, in a World Cup 2026 warm-up match as both nations’ teams get some final preparations made.

Managed by Vladimir Petkovic, Algeria are heading to their fifth World Cup finals after topping their group in the African qualifiers while the Oranje were unbeaten as European group winners with six victories and two draws from a group containing Poland and Finland.

With just ten days to go before the World Cup kicks off, these international friendly games are crucial for the head coaches to make their last-minute fine tuning and for the players to get fully match fit, and this match will be more than a useful run-out for both teams.

Talking Points

Netherlands are World Cup contenders

The World Cup 2026 betting odds here at SBOTOP rate the Oranje as eighth favourites for an outright win, so quarter finalists are the first expectation. And any nation which reaches the last eight, unless a serious underdog creates some shock waves, will believe they can go all the way and Koeman certainly has plenty of quality in his squad. Drawn in the competitive Group F, the Netherlands will face Japan, Sweden and Tunisia, three other nations with aspirations of extending their stay in the USA beyond the first group stage.

But, rated seventh in the world according to the latest FIFA World Rankings, the Netherlands are a powerhouse in international football, and they will hope to go considerably further as one of the few nations never to have won the World Cup which has a genuine chance to break that duck. In Tijjani Reijnders, the Dutch have a mercurial player who can turn a game with a moment of brilliance and striker Donyell Malen is enjoying a new lease of life since his January move to AS Roma, scoring 14 goals in 18 appearances to fire I Giallorossi into the 2026/27 Champions League. The Netherlands like to attack and with the likes of Malen and Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo in their front line the goals will surely flow. But Koeman’s teams are always superbly marshalled and Gakpo’s clubmate Virgil van Dijk will lead the team to leave nothing on the pitch. Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Micky van de Ven will hope to make his mark too, after helping Spurs to Premier League survival.

Is this Mahrez’ last stand?

Beaten by Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations quarter final this year, Algeria aren’t the strongest side in Africa, but they boast some big name players and are capable of providing a shock or two when the World Cup 2026 results start to roll in. Pitched in Group J alongside reigning champions Argentina, as well as Austria and Jordan, the Desert Warriors have a good chance to progress.

Riyad Mahrez will play an integral role in Algeria's international friendly against the Netherlands ahead of World Cup

Captained by former Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez, now playing his football in the Saudi Pro League at Al-Ahli and one of the biggest names in that emerging league, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo of course, Algeria have a leader with gravitas. With 113 caps to his name and 38 goals, Mahrez, now 35, could go on for some time but this World Cup may well be his last appearance on the global stage, along with the likes of Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Luka Modric.

He remains a superb provider and Mahrez has two decent strikers to aim for. VfL Wolfsburg forward Mohamed Amoura has scored 19 goals in 44 internationals and Olympique Marseille’s man Amine Gouiri has eight in 21 and they can strike up a fruitful partnership with their captain’s help.

Elsewhere Borussia Dortmund’s Ramy Bensebaini is at the heart of defence, while Manchester City’s 24-year-old wingback Rayan Ait Nouri will be another player to watch.

History

This will be the Netherlands’ 12th World Cup finals, and they have come very close on three occasions, as beaten finalists in 1974, 1978 and 2010, and the Oranje were European champions in 1988.

Meanwhile, in four previous World Cup finals Algeria’s best effort was a Round of 16 place in 2014.

In terms of recent form, the Desert Warriors have won two, drawn one and lost one in 2026 while the Oranje have won one, against Norway, and drawn against Ecuador this year; though both nations came through their qualification campaigns with flying colours.
