Villarreal vs Sevilla
After barely surviving relegation last term, Sevilla plan to avoid the same outcome by securing their La Liga safety as soon as possible. As of this writing, Los Palanganas are 13th in the Spanish top-flight standings with 40 points, but are only three points ahead of 18th-placed Alaves.
If Sevilla drop points against Villarreal at Estadio de la Ceramica on Wednesday night, and the teams below them – Elche, Mallorca, Espanyol, and Girona – win their respective matches on Matchday 36, things could get complicated for Luis Garcia’s side.
Villarreal are sitting pretty in third place with 69 points, and are on the brink of securing Champions League football next season. Marcelino Garcia Toral’s men are among the most in-form teams in Spain, as they’re unbeaten in their last five matches.
With that said, Sevilla need this win more than Villarreal, but doing so is much easier said than done.
Talking Points
Perez is back for Villarreal

After missing almost a month’s worth of action, Ayoze Perez has played in Villarreal’s last four matches against Real Oviedo, Celta Vigo, Levante, and Mallorca, coming off the bench in three before starting against Mallorca last time out.
Perez scored only his third goal of the season against Mallorca, as he converted the penalty in the 31st minute after a handball by Mateu Morey inside the box. However, after putting the Yellow Submarine ahead by one goal, Perez left the game prematurely in the second half due to a seemingly minor leg injury, so he’s questionable for this Wednesday’s game.
If Perez sits out against Sevilla, Georges Mikautadze will likely take his place in the starting XI. Mikautadze is Villarreal’s leading scorer with 11 goals, and he’ll likely link up with Alberto Moleiro, with 10 goals, in the final third. Tani Oluwaseyi is another viable option up front for head coach Marcelino Garcia Toral.
Nicolas Pepe is another player on Sevilla’s scouting report, as the former Arsenal winger has scored five goals in his last eight appearances and is undefeated in his last 11 goal-scoring outings (W8, D3). He is the team’s joint-top playmaker with six assists, level with Santi Comesana.
Adams comes up clutch for Sevilla
Sevilla received a massive boost from Akor Adams, as the 26-year-old striker scored the match-winner during stoppage time against Espanyol. Los Palanganas were down by one after Tyrhys Dolan scored the match’s first goal near the hour mark, but Andres Castrin scored the equaliser before Adams capped off the rally.
Adams will continue to lead up front for Los Palanganas, as he leads them in scoring with nine goals this season. After coming off the bench against Espanyol, Adams should reclaim his starting spot, likely relegating Isaac Romero or Neal Maupay to the bench.
Ruben Vargas is also expected to retain his position on the right wing, as the Swiss playmaker leads Sevilla in assists with five.
History
Villarreal won 2-1 against Sevilla in the reverse fixture at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, as Tani Oluwaseyi and Manor Solomon were on the scoresheet for the Yellow Submarine, and Djibril Sow scored for Los Palanganas. Villarreal have won four consecutive games against Sevilla, and their last eight meetings have seen both teams score.
As noted, Villarreal have lost just one of their last nine league matches (W5, D3), and Marcelino Garcia Toral’s men have been superb at home, having won all 14 of such games this season against teams outside of the Top 5.
Sevilla have lost their last four La Liga away games, part of their poor run that has seen them win only one of their last 11 competitive away games (D3, L7). However, Luis Garcia’s side has secured back-to-back league wins for the first time since October.
Betting Tip
The La Liga 2026 odds predict a relatively tight contest between Villarreal and Sevilla on Wednesday. Of course, Villarreal, being the hosts and the more in-form team, has the 2.11 edge, whereas Sevilla are at 3.18, and a draw is valued at 3.20 in the 1X2 market.
